Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

Hello Everyone! Happy February! As we embark on a new month with some nicer weather finally coming in, I want to shine a light on the exciting stuff happening across Newham.

Our all-important co-production work has started for our Local Investment for Fairness in Tough Times draft budget plans, setting out how we are proposing to inject £400m of capital investments across the borough which will benefit all residents; as well as make changes to how we will do things at the Council to protect, invest and improve vital public services for you and all residents in Newham. I’ve met with many residents; our voluntary, community and faith sector; and businesses to hear their thoughts on the proposed budget plans, and will be working hard to ensure this important feedback is implemented into our plans which we will finalise by the end of the month.

Alongside making positive progress in our borough, I was very excited to see the huge investment potential for our young people at our annual Newham Apprenticeship Fair 2024 where I met some truly brilliant superstars of the future. This National Apprenticeship Week was very aptly themed ‘Skills for Life’, and we truly champion the importance of equipping young people with the right skills for life to help them advance their careers – do check our live apprenticeship opportunities if you would like to join the Council and make a difference in Newham!

Speaking of new opportunities, we are launching our first #NewhamLovesCreatives event at Stratford Town Hall on Thursday 15 February, 6 – 8.45 pm. Come and join our free event to learn more about the exciting creative opportunities we are creating in the borough as part of our ambitions to ensure our diverse culture is at the forefront of our overarching Community Wealth-Building Agenda.

Alongside our partners TfL, London Borough of Greenwich and others we have also launched the new DLR extension consultation. The proposal includes extending the DLR from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside which would create two brand-new stations. The proposed DLR extension from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside would open up the potential to genuinely create a new town centre for the south of Newham, with more affordable homes, improved DLR connections, as well as opening up the riverfront to everyone. I would urge you to share your thoughts on these plans which will bring some much-needed investment and new opportunities in Newham.

We’ve been made aware of a scam happening around Newham of an individual going around and asking people to pay so he can dispose of your extra waste and then subsequently dumping it in other places around Newham. Please remember you can only book your waste collection through the Council waste removal service

Finally, don’t forget we also have a wide range of activities happening in the borough as part of LGBT+ History Month. During half term there’s plenty of free fun to keep the whole family entertained at our libraries. Stay well and take care!

Best wishes,

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

Have your Say – Beckton Riverside DLR Extension

Working with partners TfL, London Borough of Greenwich, GLA and others, a consulation has now been launched to get feeback on the proposals to extend the DLR from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside which would create two brand new stations.

The proposed DLR extension from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside would open up the potential to create a new town centre for the south of Newham, with more affordable homes, an improved DLR connection, as well as opening up the riverfront to everyone.

The consultation is open from 5 February 2024 to 18 March 2024.
