NEWHAM NEWS

Commercial Property Advice for Newham Traders

Last month we hosted the Commercial Property Advice providing industry advice to Newham traders to improve their businesses. The well attended event allowed the traders to engage openly with industry experts to discuss topics ranging from commercial agreements, evictions, commercial finance options, heads of terms to commercial tenancy rights.

We wanted to thank our colleagues at London Business Partnership, Barclays, Dobbin & Sullivan, Gerald Eve, CBG Law and Adobe Mortgages for all their support once again.

If you missed the in-person session and would consider attending an online event, please email us so we can gauge interest to arrange a further session.

Market Village 2

Stratford Market Village to reopen soon

Earlier this month, our proposal to take on a 15-year lease of Stratford Market Village was agreed. We are now working with the traders to sort out all the legal and operational matters so that the market can reopen very soon.

We will be announcing the reopening of the market as soon as possible, so do keep an eye out. When the market does reopen we ask our business community to make sure you visit to support the traders and welcome them back.

Support if your premises are affected by local disruption

If your premises are affected by severe local disruption (like flooding, building or roadworks), you may be eligible for a temporary reduction in your business rates.

You will need to contact the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to apply for this, as this is not dealt with through the Local Authority. You must continue to pay your business rates as demanded until a decision has been made by the VOA.

Remember appeals against rateable values can be made free of charge and therefore, we recommend that you avoid using third party Rating Agents.

Support for Small Business

Earlier this month new Government support for small businesses came into effect. From Monday 1 April, the VAT registration threshold has been raised from £85,000 to £90,000. The small business multiplier for business rates will also be frozen, protecting ratepayers from a 6.6% increase in their bills, which also includes the 12-month extension of the 75% relief for Retail, Hospitality, and Leisure (RHL) businesses. If you're entitled to receive this relief, please email our Business Rates Team.
