Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

Hello Everyone,

After what seems an endless spell of wet and miserable weather – finally the sun has come out, and it’s been pretty warm this week so far. The weekend is set to remain gorgeously sunny, so take the opportunity to make the most of the beautiful outdoors with a visit to one of our seven green flag parks. They are the perfect place to soak up some of those rays and give your little ones the chance to have fun and burn off some energy on the new play equipment.

This Council’s investment in our parks is just one way we are delivering on our promise to put young people at the heart of what we do.

Today, I was thrilled to officially open our brand new and box fresh £8 million state-of- the-art Shipman Youth Zone in Custom House! It’s a major milestone in my commitment to the young people in the borough and the value we place in the power of youth work. At a time when nationally almost a billion pounds has been cut from youth services, here in Newham I set out our agenda to do the reverse. We continue to invest in our young people because they are our future and we need to all that we can to allow them to flourish and thrive!

The Shipman Youth Zone is a fantastic space offering purpose built facilities for sport and fitness, the creative arts like music and film-making – and even cooking and vegetable growing – it’s completely environmentally friendly as it’s our first ever carbon neutral Youth Zone in the borough! What’s more the young people of Custom House were involved in every step of the planning, design and delivery of their new “home-from-home”.

The investment in the Shipman Youth Zone underlines that, despite the extraordinary pressure on our budgets, this Council remains determined to build a fairer borough where our young people can live, learn, grow and thrive.

On Tuesday I was delighted to invite a group young people from Newham’s Children in Care Council and Care Leavers Forum to our Cabinet meeting.

It was a really important moment for the Council as, for the first time, we recognised care experience as a protected characteristic. This means we are now committed to review of all of our policies across all Council services to ensure that children, in or leaving care, are not subject to the inequality and discrimination that statistically we know they can face. You can read more here.

So it’s been an inspirational week for me, as you know I am deeply committed to making sure Newham is the best place for our youngsters who are our future and we need to provide opportunities and nurture each and every one.

As we enjoy the fine weather this weekend, I’m sure I’ll meet many of you as I am out and about across the borough; and remember although it’s only May pack the sun cream especially for the little ones.

Until next week, rest well and take care!

Best wishes,

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

This festival combines Shakespeare's classic storytelling with the vibrant culture of London, creating a unique outdoor experience. Come early and enjoy the festival atmosphere with a picnic, and even sign up for a fun mask-making workshop run by our talented actors.

While the festival is family-friendly, we suggest parental guidance for younger audiences. The show is directed by Rosie Ward, with Ursula Early and Rosie Ward as the producers and co-directors of the East London Shakespeare Festival.

Woodman refurb

Refurbished Woodman Community Centre

Woodman Community Centre in North Woolwich has reopened following a full refurbishment including accessibility improvements.

The Beckton and Royal Docks Community Neighbourhood team welcomed the local community in to have a look.

Residents were pleased with the freshened up centre, with the garden area getting the thumbs up from the visitors for its new surface and revamped raised beds.

The garden was a perfect location for a taster planting session, and a chair-based yoga session inside gave attendees a taste of how the space can be used.

Ahead of Dementia Action Week next week, we would like anyone in need of more information and support to visit two stalls led by Newham’s community dementia support service. This will enable you to recognise the warning signs, while also finding out about local social and wellbeing services.

The first stall led by Newham New Deal Partnership will be held on Monday 13 May in the main reception of Newham University Hospital. There will be another opportunity to speak to professionals on Thursday 16 May at Queen’s Market in Green Street.

Our Generation Our Vote1

Our Generation, Our Vote

Newham's Youth Empowerment Service's Youth Assembly members joined the launch of Our Generation Our Vote, a political literacy initiative empowering under-18s.

This project offers a platform for young voices, leading to a youth-exclusive election across England and Wales prior to the UK general election.

Supported by Newham's Youth Empowerment Service, it enables youngsters to engage in parliamentary candidate selection. Two members presented the initiative to the All Party Parliamentary Group on political literacy.

Any youth organisation or school can participate, with information sessions scheduled for 22 May and 13 June.
