Hello Everyone, Yesterday marked one week since we learnt the heart-breaking news about the tragic death of five-year-old Aalim Makail Jibril at Jacobs House in Plaistow. I know that, like me, many of you are still trying to comprehend what happened, and feel ongoing anguish and sadness. In particular, our thoughts continue to be with Aalim’s family for the unimaginable heartache they must be feeling at this time of hurt, trauma and grief. There are no words that can express the sorrow we feel or that can take away their pain. I have been touched by the way local residents and the wider community have been united in grief for a young life taken far too soon. I know there have been many vigils and prayers for Aalim and his family. Last night it was our annual meeting of council, that marks the start of the new council year. We met in the shadow of Aalim’s death and held a one-minute’s silence in his memory, a demonstration of our collective sorrow, and an opportunity as a Council to offer our heartfelt condolences. We are all still in disbelief that such a tragic accident could happen. I told you last week the Council had established an investigation to establish the facts about what happened. I made a statement yesterday, with an update about the Council’s investigation, you can read it here. The investigation is being carried out by the Council’s internal audit team, which is legally required to be independent. It will conclude by 12 June. The investigation will look at a number of issues, including: the management of the property in question; an examination of correspondence concerning windows specifically, as well as repairs and maintenance. Additionally, the internal audit team will also consider all contractors used; assess their qualifications and relevant safety accreditations; and examine whether the housing services department followed the Council’s policies of inspecting and assessing all work carried out after they were completed. The Council intends to make the findings of the investigation public, and will of course, provide Aalim’s family with advance sight of the report. The Council continues to offer Aalim’s devastated family our full support at this difficult time, as well as other families living in Jacobs House and the local community. I will be meeting members of the Somali community tomorrow to share in their grief and offer assurance that I will continue to ask questions of the Council, and to ensure any lessons that need to be learnt will be. As Mayor of Newham, I am committed to truth, justice and candour. I will advocate on your behalf, and on behalf of Aalim, and for his family.
Take care, and please look out for each other. Best wishes, Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE Follow what I am up to via X/Twitter: @rokhsanafiaz |
