Welcome to this edition of our learner newsletter!

We have had a fantastic few weeks filled with enriching activities and inspiring events. Our ESOL learners enjoyed an educational trip to Oxford, and we were honoured to host MP Sir Stephen Timms for an engaging visit. Additionally, our community came together for a successful ESOL fundraiser, showcasing our diversity and dedication.

As we head into the half term, we encourage you to utilise this time wisely. With the final weeks of your courses approaching, it's crucial to stay focused and prepare for the challenges ahead. We look forward to seeing you back after the break, refreshed and ready to excel.

Exploring skills beyond the classroom!

ESOL trip to Oxford

This month, four coaches filled with over 150 ONLS ESOL leaners, had an amazing away day to visit Oxford and practise their English in a real environment.

From Punting to exploring the Market to wondering around the Ashmolean museum to an exciting question and answer session of Oxford on our coach, our learners were engaged and amused.

“I really liked today, the trip was fantastic” - Aurora

MP Visit

On Monday 20th May, over 50 ONLS learners had a fantastic opportunity of meeting an MP, Sir Stephen Timms.

Throughout the session, learners developed their knowledge and were informed on what an MP is, a typical day in the life of an MP and how to contact your local MP. The session was followed with a question and answer opportunity with learners querying how their local MP can support with their housing situation, environmental safety, fly tipping and job opportunities within Newham.

“The session was really good. I can’t believe I met an MP”- Aisha

The MP was very nice. I learnt a lot from the session in particular about the political structure” - Mahmood

Many thanks to all learners who attended the enrichment session.

ESOL International Day

ONLS ESOL learners marked ESOL International Day on 14th May in support of fundraising for two charities, Dost centre for Young Refugees and Migrants as well as Bridges Homeless Support.

With an opportunity to purchase food, get henna and self- portraits done, names written in Chinese Calligraphy, raffle tickets and prizes, talent and fashion show and country flag paintings, we raised a staggering amount over £715.

A massive well done to all learners involved. We hope next year will be even better.
