Hello Everyone,
Now that it’s been finally called, I wanted to send a quick note as we are now only 5 weeks away from the general election on Thursday 4 July. It means that you won’t get another email missive from me until after polling day, because of what’s called the ‘pre-election period’, which kicks in once the Council issues its formal notice of the general election which it is doing today. It basically means that local authorities, like Newham Council, are required to exercise caution in making announcements or decisions that might impact on the election campaign. All that is right and proper as it’s important to protect our democracy and ensure trust in the democratic process in Newham and in our country. Don’t forget to do all those important things like registering to vote or registering for a postal vote – and you can read all things you need to know about the elections coming up in Newham here. I’ll still be out and about and doing my Mayor of Newham stuff, so if you see me do say hello! Plus, you’ll still be receiving the weekly e-bulletins highlighting a range of things the Council is doing across the borough. For instance, there’s the official launch of a new affordable workspace for artists when we open the Alice Billing House at the Old Town Hall Stratford next Tuesday evening; and a number of People Powered Places events taking place over the coming weeks across all the neighbourhoods! Don’t forget that it’s also the start of Newham Heritage Month tomorrow, and you can read the brilliant programme here. There are also our events to mark Windrush Day 2024, as we continue with our annual honouring of our pioneer generation who have contributed so much to the rich diversity of Newham. So there’s a whole bunch of exciting stuff happening around the borough as we continue delivering for you and all our residents in Newham! Before I sign off, I also wanted to let you know that I appointed a new Deputy Mayor and you can read all about that here too. Until the 5 July, take care and stay well.
Best wishes, Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE Follow what I am up to via X/Twitter: @rokhsanafiaz |

Be Bin Day Ready - From 10 June 2024, bin collections are changing. From 10 June 2024, the way that we collect bins in Newham will change for all residents in houses or houses split into flats. These changes will help your hardworking collection crews work in a more efficient way and will also help us to increase our recycling rates. We're introducing… - New collection days
- Boundary collections – bins must now be placed at the edge of the property, by the gate or end of the drive, ready for collection from 6am
- Assisted collections for those who need support moving their bins
- No side waste will be collected
- Bin lids must be shut
To view the full breakdown of the changes, including our best practice guide on to how to present your bins on your collection day, please visit our webpage.

James Riley Point refurbishment to begin this Autumn The first phase of Carpenters Estate work will finally kick start in autumn 2024 as the Compulsory Purchase Order(CPO) for James Riley Point has been confirmed by the Secretary of State.
The works will include 136 council homes being upgraded through a £3.83 million grant from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund. Alongside a new façade allowing for high levels of thermal insulation, every home will have air source heat pumps meaning energy-efficient homes to support household finances.
The Council’s ‘retrofit first’ approach on the Carpenters Estate, delivered by its wholly owned housing company Populo Living, will see the retention and upgrade of at least 40% of the existing homes, including the refurbishment of James Riley Point to Passivhaus standards.
